Museum Christmas Card
Local artist and Museum volunteer Dustin Turnmyre has created another Christmas card for
the Museum. The original watercolor of
“Christmas at Grandfather Mountain” will be on
display at the Caldwell Arts Council throughout
the month of October. Christmas cards and prints
will go on sale at the October 30 Open House. Turnmyre is the artist who created previous
Christmas card paintings of the Museum, the Red
Pig BBQ, and Kentwood Grill. |
Charles Triplett resigns from Museum
Congratulations
to Charles Triplett (here with his friend Liza Minnelli) on
his new job! For financial reasons (more on that, see the
Director's column),
Charles resigned from the Museum on September 17.
He has
taken employment that gives him more hours and more benefits
than the Museum can provide.
Charles has
served the
Museum for over seven years in a wide range
of capacities. He began as a Museum
volunteer; he then he worked as a paid
employee on Saturdays, eventually moving
into the part-time assistant position while
continuing also to put in many hours as a
volunteer. He has been faithful, dependable,
and loyal during his tenure. The Museum
Staff and the Board of Directors wish him
well in his new work.
Charles says,
"I
have enjoyed my work at the museum [and with
its many visitors]. ... Please know I wish
you all well, and only the very best for the
future of the museum."
Bethel Colony Open House:
Report
The Annual Bethel Colony of Mercy Open House was held on
July 23, 2011, beginning at 4 p.m. Approximately 63 Bethel
residents, staff, and families enjoyed touring the Museum
and then hot dogs with all the trimmings. AJ’s Family
Steakhouse furnished BBQ beans, and Mayflower Seafood
Restaurant gave slaw. Those helping financially, by donating
food, or by giving service were: Jack Adams, Lib Barnette,
Beverly Beal, Judy Beal, Bob Booth, Steve Branch, Betty
Buss, Andrea Calloway, Myra Dickson, Colin Foust, John
Hawkins, Bob Hensley, Ed and Linda Livingston, Jamie Spears,
Charles Triplett, and Ed Whitener.
We really
appreciated the outing and our visit. It is good for the men
and their families. Thanks again for preparing food for all
of them. It has been our pleasure to see the Museum develop
over the years.

Museums In
Partnership/High Country Group Meeting: Report
The Museums in Partnership High Country Group, hosted by the
Caldwell Heritage Museum, met on July 6 at Saint James
Church. After a bag lunch, the group heard a program about
“Establishing Partnerships.” Then they were given a tour of
the Johannes Oertel art collection at Saint James’ Church by
Sandra White.
Following the art tour, the group visited the Museum.
Volunteers Judy Beal and Steve Branch helped with the
meeting.
Davenport Room Upgrade

The Davenport Room has
a new
look! Thanks to the expertise of Sidney
Halma, former Executive Director of the
Catawba Historical Association, and an
anonymous donor, the display is now
more attractive and inviting.
The room had previously been
adopted by Andrea Calloway, Lynda
Campbell, and Barbara Watson who
helped with the new design. Other
helpers, in addition to the Museum
Director and Charles Triplett, were Colin Foust and
Tom Shuford. Forrest Tate (Caldwell
County Reference Librarian) and Bill
Tate also assisted with photographs.
Larry and Tim Smith did the carpentry
work.
The upgraded display showcases
several pieces of furniture that were
associated with Davenport College as
well as informative panels giving the
history of the institution.
The room will be featured at the
October Open House.
New Volunteers
The Museum is happy to welcome Teresa
Bradshaw and Kathryn McKee as
new volunteers. Teresa is helping with the
cleaning (that Charles Triplett used to do),
and Kathryn is working on some hands-on
projects for patrons. Also Aileen Moss
and Danielle Clanton have been
volunteering on Wednesday mornings.
Volunteers
Needed
Volunteers who cannot work a regular shift
due to employment, family obligations, or
other responsibilities
may be able to work for special events such
as Open House which are usually held in the
evenings or on weekends.
Volunteers who
can be “on call” to fill in when a regular
volunteer has to be out are needed as well.
There are also still openings available for
regular volunteers who can give a set number
of hours per week. In particular, greeters are
needed on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons,
and all day Saturdays. Persons with
special skills or talents can also be used.
Anyone interested should contact the Museum
Director, indicating interest. The Museum
Director will contact the
individual when there is a need. No
volunteer is asked to work alone, until
he/she is comfortable with the job.
Other
Needs
Refreshments for the December 2, 2011, Open
House and January 29, 2012, Open Houses.
Volunteers who can be a presence throughout
the Museum at all events.
Contact the Museum Director for additional information.

Board of Director's Field
Trip
Nineteen board
members, volunteers, spouses, and friends were part of the
Museum Board of Director’s Annual Field Trip. The purpose of
the trip is to network with other Museum personnel, to share
ideas and concerns that might be of interest to both group,
and to get to know each other in a non-board setting.
The group visited the Catawba
Museum of History in Newton, had lunch at Geppetto’s, and
then went to Hart Square for the afternoon. Melinda Hertzog
and Jason Toney rolled out the red carpet at the Museum, and
Bob and Becky Hart, along with their grandson, Robert, did
the honors at Hart Square.

Hart Square. Photo by John Hawkins. |
The Catawba County Museum of
History bears testimony of the hardy settlers of the Catawba
River Valley and their resourceful descendants who carved a
world-renowned furniture and textile empire out of the
backwoods. For more than thirty years, Dr. Robert Hart of
Hickory has rescued and restored Carolina life of the
nineteenth century, recreating an entire village, Hart
Square — the largest collection of original historic log
buildings in the United States.
Transportation was by Greenway
Public Transportation and Kim Sadler was an excellent
driver. Camille Sterling worked with the Museum and the
County to coordinate the trip. Each person going on the trip
pays his/her own expense, with nothing taken from the
Museum’s budget for the outing.
What a wonderful
day. Thank you so much for sharing the “once in a lifetime”
visit to the Hart farm. It was a marvelous experience and
much appreciated.
Thank you,
Anne and Rick Bartlett
DVD Project
The History of Caldwell County: Part II “From a Barn to a
County” will be premiered and available for purchase at the
Open House on October 31. Main Event Studios was the
producer, and many people contributed toward the production
financially or in other way. The program is approximately 35
minute in length, and it is the same high quality production
as Volume I.

Biting
the Bullet, and more pleasant things
Due to the
current economic conditions, the Museum, like many other
worthy non-profit groups, is facing financial
difficulty. We have funds designated toward the
production of the second volume of the history DVD, the printing
of the calendar, and for reprinting the Centennial
Edition of the News-Topic. We are hoping that these
items, along with this year’s Christmas card, will
generate needed revenue for the Museum.
However,
we have a shortage of funds for the day-by-day operation
of the Museum. Many grants, foundations, and individuals
seem more willing to give for specific projects, because
they can see more readily where their money is going.
The Board of Directors, the Museum Director, and the
staff are committed to keeping the Museum open the same
number of hours each week and providing the same
services for our patrons that we have been providing.
But we know that financially we need to “bite the
bullet.”
While we
have always tried to be mindful to turn off unneeded
lights and air conditioning units, we have renewed our
efforts. For one thing, we will not be immediately
filling the vacant Museum Assistant position. As we have
in past years, we are putting some things on hold. We
are always looking for ways to economize.
Those who
work at the front desk are being more diligent to call
visitors’ attention to the donation box. We sent letters
to some people who normally contribute but who have not
contributed for 2011, and they responded well. In
November we will be doing our regular mail out to the
Friends of the Museum asking for their support in 2012.
We depend on donations, large or small, from interested
people. Certainly we cannot express enough gratitude to
those who help keep us going.
Changing
to a more pleasant note, one of our long-time friends,
Sidney Halma, has helped redo the Davenport Room. The
project was financed by an anonymous donor, with Sidney
serving as the contact person. One of the wonderful
things about it is that we got the benefit of Sidney’s
expertise and a state-of-the-art display at no cost to
us. It is good to have friends; and Sidney is high on
the Museum’s list of friends, as is our anonymous donor.
Our
attendance has been very good so far this calendar year.
We have had several groups as well as many individuals.
Perhaps due to the economic downturn, people are looking
for things to do locally that are free or inexpensive.
Perhaps there is a growing interest in the history of
our county. Whatever their reason, we are always glad to
have visitors and we invite them to return as often as
possible.
Among
those who came to see us in August was an energetic and
enthusiastic group of eight people from Beech Mountain.
They are planning to get a Museum started in their area.
We were happy to have them visit us, and we are looking
forward to hearing good things from them as they move
forward.
Speaking
of visits, our Board’s field trip this year was to the
Catawba County Museum of History in Newton in the
morning, and then to Hart’s Square in the afternoon. We
have previously visited Museums and historic sites in
Ashe, Lincoln, Burke and Wilkes counties. Each has been
a unique and an informative experience. None of us can
pick a favorite from among the destinations. Each person
pays his/her own way, and we eagerly anticipate our next
trip.
Biting the
bullet is never fun. However, even in the midst of
cutbacks, we can find pleasant things on which we can
focus. We will continue to be here for our patrons and
to meet as many of their needs as we possibly can.
Friends of the
Museum & Auxiliary
The Museum is extremely grateful to those who
make contributions to the Museum in money,
in kind, or in time every year. Cumulative and
annual lists of these contributors are available at the
Museum. To see the lists, just ask in person. For confidentiality
reasons, the lists are no longer available on the Museum's web site.
