Memorial Quilt

At the Museum’s Open House on May 22, when Kate Clay Bodeen was present to sign her book, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy R. Cannon of Lenoir presented to the Museum a quilt made by the author’s great grandmother, Jane Corpening Cannon (1841-1919). The quilt will be placed on display at the Museum.

Mrs. Bodeen writes: “What a treat is was to see all the relatives — some for the first time! And judging from the time they spent looking at your exhibits, I think they thoroughly enjoyed touring the Museum."

Museums In Partnership's High Country Group

The Museum will be hosting the initial meeting of the High Country Group of the Western Region of Museums in Partnership on Wednesday, July 6. Members of the group will bring bag lunches and meet at Saint James Church in the Hogan Room at 11:30 a.m. A program and a tour of the Oertel Art at Saint James will follow lunch. The group will also tour the Caldwell Heritage Museum.

Museums in Partnership (MIP) is a new (in 2011) resource for museum professionals in Western North Carolina. It is a program of Friends of Mountain History. The program's purpose is to share information, experience, knowledge, and perhaps resources.

  Volunteers Needed

Volunteers who cannot work a regular shift due to employment, family obligations, or other responsibilities
may be able to work for special events such as Open House which are usually held in the evenings or on weekends.

Volunteers who can be “on call” to fill in when a regular volunteer has to be out are needed as well.

There are also still openings available for regular volunteers who can give a set number of hours per week. In particular, greeters are needed on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and all day Saturdays. Persons with special skills or talents can also be used.

Anyone interested should contact the Museum Director, indicating interest. The Museum Director will contact the
individual when there is a need. No volunteer is asked to work alone, until he/she is comfortable with the job.

Other Needs

Food items or financial assistance for the Bethel Colony Open House on July 23.

Refreshments for the October 30 Fifth Sunday and the December 2 Open House.

Volunteers who can be a presence throughout the Museum at all events.

 Board Highlights

The Board met May 19. A quorum was present. All reports, including minutes, were accepted as printed. The Board approved the purchase of security cameras. There were no volunteers for Blues Festival booth. A booth at the Blackberry Festival is on hold. A tour of homes as a fundraiser is still possibility. The board authorized the
investigation of reprinting the News-Topic Centennial Edition. A Board retreat was set for June 25. Bob Booth agreed to investigate a chair lift that could be used in lieu of an elevator. The official minutes are available at Museum during regular hours.

Board Vacancies

One third of the Board members have terms that expire each year on December 31. This year the three members whose terms end are: Andrea Calloway, Tom Shuford, and Ed Whitener. Whitener is the only one who is not eligible to be re-elected, and he is serving as chairperson of the Nominating Committee. Bob Booth and Judy Beal are the other Nominating Committee members and the Museum Director is an ex-officio committee member.

Suggestions for Board members can be made to the Chairperson or to the Museum Director. Board members will be approved by the Caldwell County Historical Society at their annual meeting in November.

Township Calendar

For several years the Museum has published a township calendar featuring pictures from each of the thirteen townships. Last year individuals could list birthdays and anniversaries for $2.00 per listing/6 for $10.00. The option is available again this year. Any questions should be directed to the Museum Director. You can still use last year's form to order dates to be included, or you can request a new form from the Museum.

DVD Project

Things are moving forward with the second DVD. The response to the request for funding has been gratifying. More than $6,000 has been received. The narration by Rock Brooks and Bill Nowin has been recorded. Filming of the commentary with Mike Gibbons and John Hawkins was done on May 4. Fredel Reighard filmed on May 18. Jim Harper will film in July. David Abernathy and Mike Willis are helping with music. Bill Tate and Charles Triplett are working with photographs. Plans are to have the DVD completed by our Open House on October 30. Main Event Studios in Granite Falls is doing the work.

Committee reports  (For details of committee responsibilities, see the April 11 newsletter.)

The DVD Committee met with Lance Main of Main Event Studios at the Museum on March 23, at 10 a.m. One member was not present. They discussed the first steps to filming the DVD. Members will assist with the filming as needed. More.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee met at the Museum on Thursday, April 7, at 10 a.m. One member was not present. The Museum Director reported that the work had begun on the doors. The group members met with representatives of the J. P. Computer Consulting and with representatives from the school system regarding security cameras. They visited Lower Creek School to see a system that had been installed. A few changes were requested and a new bid will be presented. The Board approved installation at its May meeting.

The Finance Committee met on Wednesday, April 13, at 3:45 p.m. Two members were present along with the Museum Director, Bob Booth, Vice-Chairperson, and guest, Pete Kidder. The group discussed grants that might be available. A retreat to develop a long-range plan to include financial concerns was suggested.

Getting excited.

It’s an exciting time at the Caldwell Heritage Museum. I am not sure that I can recount all the things that have us elated. The listing order is in no way indicative of the importance nor is it a chronology of the happenings.

First, the second of our DVD series recording the history of Caldwell County is in progress. Much of the work has been done. We are planning to have the premier at the October Fifth Sunday Open House.

Second, at the same Open House our 2011 Christmas card and our 2012 township calendars will be on sale. Melba Stapleton is assisting with the card selection again this year which will be a snow scene of Grandfather Mountain painted by Dustin Turnmyre.

Third, two more rooms have been painted. The Caldwell County Historical Society adopted the Caldwell County Schools room and they decided a coat of paint was needed. Charles Triplett painted the Toys and Games room. In addition, several displays have been upgraded with mounted photos and new labels making them more “museum quality.”

Fourth, our exterior doors have been reworked. The Caldwell County Schools maintenance personnel examined the old doors, determined they were in relatively good condition and could be reworked. All the doors now fit better and they are easier of manipulate.

Fifth, security cameras, which have been needed for a long time, have been installed. Board members, Bob Booth and Mike Gibbons, were instrumental in getting this project going. So when you come to visit, smile!

Sixth, our Bethel Colony Open House is just around the corner. We have done this for several years to say thanks for their helping us maintain our yard and in other ways. The Bethel residents are always so appreciative, and those of us who volunteer on that day enjoy it just as much as they do.

Seventh, our July Fifth Sunday Open House will feature Collettsville Historical Society items on display. They will even furnish the refreshments! Come out and greet your friends from the Collettsville community. This active group is an example to all of us when it comes to preserving the history of their community.

Eighth, our Board field trip this year will be to the Catawba County Museum in Newton in the morning and then to Hart’s Farm in the afternoon. Board members, who attend at their own expense, are always inspired when we see what others are doing, and it is a wonderful way to get to know each other better.

Ninth, for the second time in our history, we had a retreat for Board members, Museum staff, and regular volunteers. Pete Kidder, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity in Caldwell County, led us in making long-range plans and determining a course of action. You’ll be hearing more about it.

Tenth, the Compensatory Education Instructors at CCC & TI planted a memorial garden to Steven Jaynes in the front of the building. Bob Hensley, who helped select plants for the memorial, also donated additional plants for the Davenport School side of the building and put them in the ground. The Historical Society donated an urn to replace one that vandals had
taken. All these items add to the beauty of the grounds.

I’ve run out of fingers for counting and space for writing, so I must come to an end. Hopefully, you have a little idea why we are excited. We hope our excitement is contagious
