JUST VISITING

I always enjoy preparing this page of the newsletter because it makes me feel as if we’re having a personal visit. Admittedly it’s a bit one-sided since I’m doing all the talking, but, hopefully you’re learning things that you find interesting and beneficial.

A big “Thank You” is extended to each person who acknowledged my 70th birthday by attending the reception, by giving a gift to the Museum, by sending a card, or by remembering me in some other way. I have tried to acknowledge the gifts, and if I overlooked you, please accept my apology. Barbara Freiman told me that seventy is a very good year, and I agree with her. Eliza Bishop, who is a couple of months behind me, thinks we go for another seventy, and I couldn’t agree more. A cousin’s young daughter said I “looked natural,” which I assume is a compliment.

My birthday is not the only good thing that has happened. Our May Fifth Sunday Open House featured Patricia East, author of the novel Wherever It Snows, and her aunt, Bobbie J. Curtis, furnished delicious refreshments. Hibriten High School’s Southern Culture Class had their projects on display and some students were here to interpret the items. Thanks to their teacher, John Spicer, for all his help. We plan to do it again next year.

We were also delighted to have four Davenport A+ School fourth grade classes visit us near the end of the school year. These enthusiastic, well-behaved students participated in a scavenger hunt as learned about Caldwell County. We hope they will come again.

We have some other events coming up that are mentioned elsewhere in the newsletter. One of the most rewarding is the Open House for Bethel Colony. Those people are appreciative, and they let it be known. If you need a lift, volunteer on that day. You’ll get food for your spirit, as well as food for your body.

Currently our display through mid-September is David Burns’ comic books. He plans to be present at our August Fifth Sunday Open House, and he will have additional books for that day only, including a rare first edition of “Batman.”

Our October 31st Fifth Sunday Open House will mark the official debut of the 2010 Christmas card and the 2011 township calendar. This year’s Christmas card is “Christmas at the Kentwood Grill,” painted by Dustin Turnmyre, a Museum volunteer, who did the well-received “Christmas at the Red Pig” a few years ago. The painting was commissioned by Melba Burgess Stapleton whose parents owned and operated the Kentwood for many years. We plan to have prints available as well.

As I am writing this, we are selecting pictures for the township calendar. We are adding a new feature this year. For a small fee, you can list your birthday, wedding anniversary, or other significant date on the calendar.

On the horizon is the DVD of early area history. Lance Main of Main Events Studio is the contractor, and Tom Shuford, Board member, is chairing this project. It is a high quality production, and the first results look great. I am not sure at this point when it will be on the market, but you will certainly be kept informed.

Speaking of staying informed, we have several avenues by which we pass information along to you. In addition to this newsletter, we have this website that is kept current. We also use the area newspapers, local radio and television, and e-mail. Of course, you can always call us. If you call during working hours, you’ll get a real-live human answering the telephone. We want you to be “in the know.”

Space dictates that this visit must come to an end. It was nice chatting with you. Come be to see us, and when you do, I’ll let you do the talking.
