New Volunteers

The Museum is happy to welcome several new volunteers in the past few months: Becky Robbins  is working the desk every other Saturday morning and helping on special occasions; Jack Adams, Lynda Campbell, Ray Church and  Janice Younce help when called upon or as their schedules permit. Regulars to work in the afternoons or those who can work occasionally are needed. Contact the Museum.

Book Signing

John A. McKinsey,  author of The Lincoln Secret, was at the Caldwell Heritage Museum on October 11 to sign his book. The event was co-sponsored by the Museum and the Friends of the Caldwell County Library.   Approximately 21 people attended and enjoyed the author's comments on his book. Mr. McKinsey plans to be back in North Carolina in 2010 and will be available to speak to civil clubs and other groups. The book is available on sale at the Caldwell Heritage Museum.

 Museum Attendance

Museum attendance for the fourth quarter of 2009:: October 268; November 250; and December 159. The total attendance for the fourth quarter totaled 677, an average of 226 per month. The year's total attendance was 3,427, an average of 286 per month.

he Fourth Fifth Sunday Open House (the November 29 Shop `Til You Drop event) saw 68 visitors, many of whom were first-timers to the Museum.

The Museum's previous high attendance record was broken on November 27 by Spencer Fox  (above) of Winston-Salem who was visitor
# 3,188 for the year.

Groups that visited during the last quarter of the year: Early College, Caldwell County Historical Society (annual meeting and Christmas party), Hibriten High School Southern Cultures Class, Ebenezer United Methodist Church Seniors, Faithful Followers Sunday School Class of Yadkin Baptist Church of Patterson.

The Museum was closed two days in December due to snow, and was closed also on Christmas Day.

Board of Directors

The Caldwell County Historical Society approved Bob Booth, Mike Gibbons, and Lynn Martin. to Board terms expiring December 31, 2012. They joined the Board on January 1, 2010. The Historical Society's Executive Committee approved the appointment of Andrea Calloway to complete Bill Kinkaid's unexpired term; and she joined the Board at its November 2009 meeting.

At the January 2010 meeting, Board officers will be elected and the 2010 budget will be approved.

Board Highlights

The Board met on November 19, 2009. In addition to welcoming Andrea Calloway to the Board, thanked Ann Miller and Dale Hamby (whose terms were to expire on December 31) for their years of service on the Board. Approved Treasurer's and Museum Director's reports. Discussed role and makeup of Board committees for the future. Motion made and seconded for the Board to meet six times (every other month) during 2010. Discussed possibility of a field trip after the Christmas holiday to Burke Museum and Waldensian Museum. The latter has responded positively and may be able to arrange a wine tasting at the Waldensian Heritage Winery as well. Discussed possibility of selling some unused World War II uniforms from the Museum's collection. Dale Hamby examined some of these after the meeting and determined that they are not exceptionally historical or rare, and thus would not bring a great deal of money.

The Board furnished refreshments for Caldwell County Historical Society Annual Meeting on Nov. 8, 2009.

From the Director's Desk………………………………………...….John O. Hawkins

January 1 marked the beginning of the 10th year as Director of the Caldwell Heritage Museum. Where has the time gone? But more importantly, what has been accomplished during that time?

Let me say, first of all, that I have not done it alone. The ideas, the encouragement, and the elbow grease of many people have made things happen. Together we have had some success.

We have established regular operating hours, begun a quarterly newsletter, reorganized our Board of Directors, revised our by-laws, created the Friends of the Museum and a Museum Auxiliary of volunteers, and re-organized many of our regular displays. We have made some improvements to the building. We have gone through the first part of the Museum Assessment Program, completed our inventory, and our budget has increased. We now have a part-time paid employee for continuity, in addition to our many dedicated volunteers. We rotate our Main Floor Special Exhibits regularly. And. this year we broke our former high attendance record.

We began publishing an annual township calendar of local historic photographs that people look forward to each year. Our annual Christmas cards have become collector's items. Our Annual Open House has evolved into an open house on each fifth Sunday in a month, called "Four Fifths." In addition, we hosted several other events throughout the years, often in cooperation with other groups.

What is the secret of what has been accomplished?  I think it can be summed up in one word: Dedication.  We have a dedicated group of what I call "regular" volunteers who are faithful and dependable to give a few hours of time each week. We also have what I refer to as our "irregular" volunteers. Equally dedicated, they are people we can call on when we need special help such as preparing mailings, being present at events, or doing odd jobs. All of these workers make up our Museum Auxiliary, and their names and the hours they have given are listed elsewhere in this newsletter (through this link). We still have a place for more people who can give of their time either "regularly" or "irregularly."

And we cannot forget the Friends of the Museum.  They are the ones who support us with financial gifts and in-kind contributions.  Even during this time of economic downturn, they have kept us going. Because of them we can keep the lights burning, the heat or air conditioning on, and the doors open on a daily basis. Many have supported us year after year, and we are also happy that each year we add some new contributors to our list. Whether the gift is large or small, it is appreciated, because it reflects the dedication of the donor.

There is much more that needs to be done. We are aware of many things, but we are also open to suggestions. Just as the part accomplishments were not the work of one person, any future attainments will also have to be a cooperative effort. We are counting on the dedication of our Board, our volunteers, our supporters, and people like you to get the job done.

So, we give a big "Thank You" to everyone for your dedication. We look forward to working with you in 2010.
