John A. McKinsey,
author of The Lincoln Secret,
was at the Caldwell Heritage Museum on October 11 to sign
his book. The event was co-sponsored by the Museum and the
Friends of the Caldwell County Library.
Approximately 21 people attended and enjoyed the author's
comments on his book. Mr. McKinsey plans to be back in North
Carolina in 2010 and will be available to speak to civil
clubs and other groups. The book is available on sale at the
Caldwell Heritage Museum.
From the Director's Desk ... .John O. Hawkins January 1 marked the beginning of the 10th year as Director of the Caldwell Heritage Museum. Where has the time gone? But more importantly, what has been accomplished during that time? Let me say, first of all, that I have not done it alone. The ideas, the encouragement, and the elbow grease of many people have made things happen. Together we have had some success. We have established regular operating hours, begun a quarterly newsletter, reorganized our Board of Directors, revised our by-laws, created the Friends of the Museum and a Museum Auxiliary of volunteers, and re-organized many of our regular displays. We have made some improvements to the building. We have gone through the first part of the Museum Assessment Program, completed our inventory, and our budget has increased. We now have a part-time paid employee for continuity, in addition to our many dedicated volunteers. We rotate our Main Floor Special Exhibits regularly. And. this year we broke our former high attendance record. We began publishing an annual township calendar of local historic photographs that people look forward to each year. Our annual Christmas cards have become collector's items. Our Annual Open House has evolved into an open house on each fifth Sunday in a month, called "Four Fifths." In addition, we hosted several other events throughout the years, often in cooperation with other groups. What is the secret of what has been accomplished? I think it can be summed up in one word: Dedication. We have a dedicated group of what I call "regular" volunteers who are faithful and dependable to give a few hours of time each week. We also have what I refer to as our "irregular" volunteers. Equally dedicated, they are people we can call on when we need special help such as preparing mailings, being present at events, or doing odd jobs. All of these workers make up our Museum Auxiliary, and their names and the hours they have given are listed elsewhere in this newsletter (through this link). We still have a place for more people who can give of their time either "regularly" or "irregularly." And we cannot forget the Friends of the Museum. They are the ones who support us with financial gifts and in-kind contributions. Even during this time of economic downturn, they have kept us going. Because of them we can keep the lights burning, the heat or air conditioning on, and the doors open on a daily basis. Many have supported us year after year, and we are also happy that each year we add some new contributors to our list. Whether the gift is large or small, it is appreciated, because it reflects the dedication of the donor. There is much more that needs to be done. We are aware of many things, but we are also open to suggestions. Just as the part accomplishments were not the work of one person, any future attainments will also have to be a cooperative effort. We are counting on the dedication of our Board, our volunteers, our supporters, and people like you to get the job done. So, we give a big "Thank You" to everyone for your dedication. We look forward to working with you in 2010.
