Civil War markers. Thanks to all who contributed to help us meet our 2011 historical marker maintenance goal of $400.00!  These funds were received through donations at various Society events.

For the annual maintenance of the two Civil War Trails markers in the county, the Historical Society has a special account separate from the rest of the Society's budget; and designated gifts for that purpose are always appreciated. Donations for 2012 are now being accepted. Please make checks payable to "Civil War Markers" and mail or bring them to the Caldwell Heritage Museum, c/o the Society , at 112 Vaiden St SW in Lenoir 28645.

Our markers are located in Patterson (above) at the Ruritan building, across from the Happy Valley School, and in Lenoir at the Corner of Main Street and Harper Ave, behind St. James' Episcopal Church. See more details here.

Projects. The schools room and toy room at the Museum have recently been painted and updated. The Society paid for the painting and Barbara Love paid for the schools room paint.  The labor cost to paint the school room was $300, with the painter, David Colvard, making a $50 donation to the Museum.

The lower part of the toy room was painted by Charles Triplett, museum assistant, with paint left over from the painting of the Museum library last year.

Kathryn Jackson paid for a new urn to replace the one that was stolen from the front of the museum in April.  This was the second time the planter had been stolen.  Barbara Love paid for the flowers, soil, locks, and chains to secure the planters.  Thanks to Charles Triplett for completing the project of installing and planting the urns.

Executive Committee. The Executive Committee of the Society met on May 26 at Giovanni’s Restaurant.  The minutes of the past meeting were approved and the treasurer’s balance was $9,447.00.  The committee voted to begin publishing our own newsletters. The entire committee will take charge of this. We appreciate John Hawkins taking care of our newsletters in the past.

About the Historical Society. The Caldwell County Historical Society was organized in 1949 and chartered as a non-profit corporation on July 3, 1950. The purpose as stated in the charter continues as:  “…to investigate and study the history of Caldwell County, provide for collecting of information relevant thereto; protect and display archival documents, records, artifacts; mark and preserve historic sites and buildings; own, lease, operate, or sell real or personal property, publish and sell a history or other works of interest to citizens of Caldwell County.”

The first president of the Caldwell County Historical Society was Mrs. W. I. Pitts, and one of the first items of business for the group was to find a location for a museum. In this they were finally successful when the museum opened to the public in 1991.  The Museum and the Historical Society are now separately incorporated, and each continues its own work in the common purpose of saving Caldwell County history for future generations.
