Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed who will furnish refreshments or serve as greeters at the April 23 event (see above).  If you will do either or help in some other way, call President Barbara Watson at 828-758-8661.  Ms. Brooks was well-received last year when she portrayed Mrs. Stonewall Jackson, which was recently shown again on the local television station.  A large attendance is anticipated, so mark your calendars and make your plans now!

 Workshop

The Caldwell Heritage Museum is joining with the Federation of North Carolina Historical Societies to sponsor a spring workshop on May 3, 2010, from 9:30 to 2:45 p.m., at the Caldwell County Public Library in Lenoir.  The subjects will be “Hands-On History: Object-Based Learning and Craft Activities” and “Marketing Our History.”  The cost of the workshop is $20 and lunch is included.

The Museum is offering a limited number of full scholarships to the workshop to volunteers or potential volunteers.  The recipient will have to write a 200-word paper about how the sessions will be beneficial to the Museum, and he/she will have to agree to give at least 20 hours of volunteer service that relates to the sessions covered by the workshop to the Museum before the end of 2010.  Application forms can be picked up at the Museum, and they must be submitted by April 15.

Audit

Again this year, Treasurer Judy Beal received excellent marks by the auditor for her excellent management of the Society’s books.  The audit is available for examination during regular Museum hours.

Wylmoth Jenkins Passes

Life-time Caldwell County Historical Society member, Wylmoth Jenkins, passed away on March 14, 2010, following several years of declining health.  She first appears on the society’s membership roll in 1962. Many society members recall that she became the president in the mid-1970’s at a time when the membership was on the decline, and she worked hard to instill new life into the society.  She was the one who led a group before the School Board to ask for the last remaining Davenport College building as a Museum.  For years each time the Museum had an Open House, she sat at the door recruiting Society members and asking for donations to be placed in a black cast iron kettle.  For her efforts, the Society made her an honorary life-time member.* Her support for the Museum continues even after her death when the family requested that memorials be made in her memory for the Museum.

In addition to her Historical Society and Museum efforts, she was also active in several other civic and religious activities in the community.  She taught in the Caldwell County School system for forty years, and she was a consummate traveler both inside and outside of the United States.

[The Society at one time gave five people honorary lifetime members for their efforts in getting the Caldwell Heritage Museum started.  In addition to Mrs. Jenkins, Bill and Mimi Stronach as well as George and Imogene Robbins were so honored.  Mrs. Stronach and Mrs. Robbins are the only two remaining lifetime members.]

Civil War Markers

The maintenance fee for the two Civil War Trails markers in the county is $200.00 per marker, or $400.00 per year.  The Historical Society has a special account for the markers and gifts designated for the account are appreciated.  The fee is covered for 2010, but donations in any amount are being accepted for 2011 and beyond. Make checks to “Civil War Markers” and mail or bring to the above address.  One marker is located at Patterson across from the Happy Valley School and the other is in Lenoir at the corner of Main Street and Harper Avenue behind Saint James’ Episcopal Church.

Tidbit from Caldwell County History

George Powell’s store-house, where Caldwell County was created in 1841, was a disused building in which Mr. Powell had obviously operated a store.  It was located near the present intersection of the Wilkesboro and Taylorsville highway/

The Caldwell County Historical Society was organized in 1949 and chartered as a non-profit corporation on July 3, 1950. The purpose as stated in the charter continues as:  “…to investigate and study the history of Caldwell County, provide for collecting of information relevant thereto; protect and display archival documents, records, artifacts; mark and preserve historic sites and buildings; own, lease, operate, or sell real or personal property, publish and sell a history or other works of interest to citizens of Caldwell County.”

The first president of the Caldwell County Historical Society was Mrs. W. I. Pitts, and one of the first items of business for the group was to find a location for a museum. In this they were finally successful when the museum opened to the public in 1991.  The museum and the historical society are now separately incorporated, and each continues its own work in the common purpose of saving Caldwell County history for future generations,
