The Caldwell County music
rooms are on the
Museum's second floor. They display band uniforms from the
several Caldwell County schools, past and present, most notably
from the Lenoir High School Band (1924-1977); as well as
photographs, scrapbooks, trophies, and some recordings.
The collection in the
two connected rooms covers a broad range of donated
memorabilia.
This (above) is one
of several Lenoir High School Band uniforms used over
the years of the band's existence. Below is another one.
The most typical uniform over the years however was
black with white accents, such as on the majorette
uniform in the center and with the belt bukcle below
right.
The LHS band was
founded by Dr. James C. Harper in 1924 with instruments donated
by the American Legion Post; and was one of the first
high school bands in North Carolina.
The 1930's LHS Band
Building (left) was completed in 1962. The tubes
in front are recording cylinders.
Freedman High School served the Caldwell County African
American community from 1932 to 1967.
The LHS Band won many awards of excellence, and were
invited to play at many events throughout North
America. As one example, the band paraded at the
inauguration of NC Governor Wm Umstead in 1953.
West Caldwell High
School was established in 1977 during a county school
consolidation, and serves the Freedman/Gamewell area.
The Hudson/Sawmills
area is now served by South Caldwell High School,
established in 1977.
Lenoir is now
served by the West Caldwell and
Hibritenhigh Schools.
